The 2008 Golf Course Changes in Augusta National

With the 2008 Masters Golf Tournament scheduled on April 7-13, The Masters Tournament committee immediately announced in October 3, 2007 the changes in the golf course at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia.

According to Billy Payne, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, changes were made to four holes namely in Nos. 1, 7, 9, and 11 in line with this year’s Masters Golf Tournament. Moreover, there are also modifications made on the grounds in preparation for the big game. Payne added that these are normal and are made almost every year since the tournament started back in 1934.

The changes in Hole No. 1 include the addition of ten yards to the front of the Masters tee. This provides more flexibility especially when hit by a strong northwest wind. Meanwhile, the back of the tee was decreased to ease patron movement. However, scoreboard remains at 455 yards. Meanwhile, green was changed because of agronomic reasons in Hole No. 7. In addition, around six feet was added to the left side which allows 2-3 additional pin placements. On the other hand, green was also changed in Hole No. 9. Moreover, right pin placement was softened on first and middle plateaus. With regard to Hole No. 11, several trees were removed again for better patron viewing just like last year.

Other golf course changes include the construction of a new patron viewing area on the hillside at Hole No. 16, more work on the new practice facility that will open in the year 2010, adding and extending azalea beds to give more color, and replacing grass with pine straw between Hole Nos. 15 and 17. Pine straw was also added tot eh left side of Hole No. 15. On the other hand, the hillside seating area is found on the left of the pond at Hole No. 16 and will provide viewing for up to 2,000 patrons. From this location you can view Hole No. 6 green, the second shot and every putt at Hole No. 15, the green complex at No. 16 and the tee shot and second shot at Hole No. 17. You cane easily gain access to this area through the newly renovated back entrance where patrons can transport to Hole No. 16 hillside, Hole No. 5 fairway, or to Hole Nos. 13, 14, and Amen Corner.

According to Payne, these changes and renovations in preparation for the 2008 Masters Golf Tournament will surely make Augusta National the best of its kind. These will also benefit the patrons a lot because they will be provided with a better view in watching the competition. Furthermore, they can also help invited players to perform their best.
